Oh dear me. What has happened to Cafe Uno in Enfield? I used to love coming here with my family. The atmosphere was great, service impeccable and with great food from an extensive menu. This is sadly no more. Not sure if its the effect of the credit crunch and the quality of service staff is no longer affordable or a change of management but the once warm feeling we had as a family will be forever gone. On our last (and final visit), having been given a new set menu along with the standard menu I was surprised that old favourites were no longer there and the menu had been severely restricted and limited. My first thought was the restaurant being more cost efficient in its offerings but hopefully concentrating and specialising in a select number of dishes. My wife and I both decided to order from the reasonably priced set menu. She decided on the soup starter, minestrone as on the menu and a chicken salad with anchovies. I had the Pizetta aglio; a Stone-baked pizza bread topped with melted mozzarella and cherry tomatoes along with the same salad. My starter was fine if not a little dry (but I may just be nitpicking now due to the bad dining experience). To our surprise, My wife's soup landed on our table RED? When querying why our minestrone was red we were advised that the soup of the day was tomato and basil. Not an unacceptable soup by any means however not what was on the menu nor what we had ordered. Never mind, we made do, not wanting to make a fuss. However, it took 40mins for our salads to arrive despite their being only 2 other couples in the restaurant. On arrival I asked to see the set menu once again. It did indeed state that it came with anchovies. Ours did not. It was also the only salad on the menu (so could not be confused with another). Salad was very dry, no dressing and I counted 5 croutons and 2 pieces of grilled chicken among the bowl of lettuce. At this point I did something I have never in my life done before. I called our waiter over and asked him to remove our plates from the table and to call a manager. A manager was not available, I told them this was unacceptable and our whole dining experience was ruined. I also said I would not be paying for something I did not order and the answer I received was that the chef had forgotten the anchovies, they were running low on chicken and that if I did not want to pay he wouldn't blame me ??? not the best attitude or sorry excuse. Needless to say, what was once a pleasurable dining experience is sadly no more, we will not be venturing into this particular eatery ever again.
